Potomac Horse Fever in Kentucky

Potomac Horse Fever in Kentucky
Posted by Event Mgmt. on Fri 09 Aug, 2002
Five cases of Potomac Horse Fever have been confirmed in Kentucky, and four other horses are undergoing tests to confirm the disease. Two of the horses were euthanized, while the others are being treated and are expected to recover. The bacterial disease can be successfully cured if diagnosed early. It is associated with bacteria carried by fly larvae, and horses kept near freshwater streams and ponds are most at risk of infection. Usually Kentucky only sees 1-2 cases per year. For information on symptoms and treatment, contact your local vet or the state Dept of Agriculture.
