Mayfest Floods

Mayfest Floods

As you may have heard, Mayfest 2004 was cancelled on Sunday after a weekend of terrible storms. Friday night before cross country, a tornado went through Lexington and devastated areas around Masterson Station Park and wrecked the Waffle House near the Horse Park. That night, we (the Organizers), some of the staff and many competitors spent most of the night in the ballroom of the Four Points Sheraton, in the dark, listening to windows breaking and the winds howling. Not fun!

But luckily the storm wasn't too bad at the Park and all of the horses were okay. And Saturday was beautiful. The Training Level Three Day and the Preliminary and Training Horse Trials competitors had great weather for their cross country and the stadium and dressage for the other divisions faired equally well.

Sunday arrived with storms all around. After stopping and starting a couple of times, we were alerted by the Kentucky Horse Park staff that extremely severe weather was headed towards Lexington and with that, we made the difficult choice to halt the competition. Concern for everyone's safety and knowing that many people were going to have to drive into the oncoming storms were factors in the decision. Besides, the Novice and Beginner Novice cross country courses were under water!

Most everyone was able to get home before the second wave of storms hit, but we spent another night in the ballroom of the hotel. These pictures show a little of what we saw Monday morning at the park. It was so flooded that the Rolex island in the Head of the Lake water jump had floated out over the dam and ended up against the road behind the stadium bleachers!

Thank you to all of those who sent us positive comments about our decision. It was not an easy choice to make and your understanding is very much appreciated. Let's all look forward to a great Mayfest in 2005!
