The first equine case of West Nile Virus this year in Kentucky was confirmed June 27. A thoroughbred yearling died in Fayette County on June 4, even though the colt had received the recommended series of two vaccinations earlier this spring. A second equine death in Nelson County has also been attributed to the West Nile Virus. A third death, this time in Greenup Co, occurred July 29 and was recently confirmed. A 13-year-old Tennessee Walking Horse in Whitley Co. was also diagnosed with the disease in July, but has recovered. Last year six horses died of West Nile Virus in Kentucky.
